Have you ever wondered what makes those autumn lea Have you ever wondered what makes those autumn leaves explode with color?

⛅️As daylight decreases, it signals to deciduous trees that it's time to stop the food-making process (photosynthesis) and prepare for dormancy.

👋Chlorophyll Breaks Down (The Green Fades): Since there isn't enough sunlight and water to make food efficiently anymore, the tree stops producing this green pigment.

🧡The Hidden Colors Emerge (Yellow & Orange): Leaves always contain Carotenoid pigments but during the Summer, the massive amount of green chlorophyll completely hide them--since we are about to say goodbye to the green, we can say HELLO to these bright colors!

🍁The New Colors are Made (Red & Purple): Anthocyanin is not often in the leaves during Summer but they are actively created in the Fall when the trees trap sugars inside. When the bright sunlight hits the the trapped sugars it creates the brilliant reds and purples!

Some of the best Fall showstoppers are Maples, Oaks and Ginkgo!

🗣PSA: make sure you are on the lookout for Spot 🗣PSA: make sure you are on the lookout for Spotted Lanternfly who pose a significant threat to agriculture and ecosystems in the United States! Learn more here...

➡️Why They Are So Bad:
▪️Major threat to agricultural industries particularly those related to grapes, fruit trees (like apples and peaches), and timber. They are known to cause crop loss, reduce the quality of produce, and increase management costs for growers.
▪️They Damage plants through feeding. Both the nymphs and adults feed by using their piercing mouthparts to suck the sap from the trunks, stems, and branches of plants. They feed on over 100 plant species, including economically important crops and native trees like maple, walnut, and birch.
▪️While they feed on many plants, their preferred host is the invasive Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). This is an important ecological connection, as the spread of one invasive species (the tree) has helped facilitate the spread of another (the lanternfly).

➡️ Identification:
▪️Adults: About 1 inch long with distinct wings. The forewings are grayish with black spots, and the hind wings are a striking scarlet red with black spots and white and black bars.
▪️Nymphs: There are four nymph stages. The first three stages are small and black with white spots. The final nymph stage is larger and bright red with black and white spots.
▪️Egg Masses: The eggs are laid in masses of 30-50 eggs, usually in the late fall. They are covered with a waxy, putty-like substance that resembles a smear of mud when it dries. They can be found on a wide variety of surfaces, including trees, rocks, fences, outdoor furniture, and vehicles.

➡️Reporting Spotted Lanternfly Sightings:
🔍Inspect outdoor items such as firewood, vehicles, furniture etc. for egg masses
👀See it--take pictures and note locations
👢Squash adults or scrape egg masses into hot soapy water
