This client wanted a place where they could relax and get away from the busy hustle and bustle of their city job, and come with their family and friends for hunting weekends in the country. We knew the space would have to be low maintenance, in keeping with it’s rural surroundings, and someplace that was soothing for them to enjoy a s’more over the campfire.
A major addition and renovation to the existing house footprint meant that we could totally revamp the foundation plantings as well as add a large stone patio for outdoor seating and fire pit. We recommended natural materials such as irregular bluestone and native plantings to help the new beds fit into the rural area and not feel overly flashy. We started with a sketch drawing, then converted it into a 2D visual to help get a sense of the space. Finally we completed a conceptual master plan showing all of the elements that would be installed over the course of a year.
We acted as both the planting bed installation team, as well as the general contractor, coordinating with the team that installed the hardscape elements. The front entry beds were our first focus, as we could make progress on prepping and installing those beds while the other team worked on the back patio. This project took the better part of a summer to install from start to finish, but the collaboration between the teams stayed strong - often jumping in to help each other wrap up our respective tasks at the end of the day.
Only one year later and the beds are already filling in and looking lush with minimal care, and no irrigation system. It's great when the right plant selection, and planting techniques work out to create a sustainable, low maintenance landscape.
