Storybook Cottage

Our Challenge

This project was a creative challenge because the architecture of the house was so strong - requiring that the foundation plantings be large enough, and bold enough to be cohesive with the home. As a year-round resident, in a very exposed site, we wanted to make sure plant selection was deer resistant, able to withstand northern winds, and interesting during all seasons.

Phase 1

Inspiration

New clients reached out to us hoping we could help them design and install foundation plantings to help ground their new construction home better into the landscape. With it’s bright color and unique architecture, this home lent itself to a more fun, whimsical, and inspired plant palette.  We set out with a pre-set list of plants, but also took advantage of great locally grown selections at the nurseries when we were shopping. The major inspiration on this project was the plants themselves. We tried to mostly use Proven Winner branded plants, so that we could see how some of the newer varieties would do in harsher climates.

Phase 2

Concept Design

We knew the owners were looking for something bold in color, but wanted that even in the cold, wintery months for Upstate NY. Which meant we needed to incorporate a lot of plants with winter interest.

Phase 3

Under Construction

Fortunately, most of the hardscaping work had been done in advance, so we really got to just focus on creating new plant beds, adding our blended mix of topsoil and compost, making sure to give the plants the best start possible. Once we placed and planted the shrubs and perennials, we added mulch to finish it off.

Phase 4

Enjoy!

The plantings are now on their third season, and most have done great. We’ve only found a few surprises, and made some substitutions that are slightly hardier to get through the cold winters, but otherwise, all the plants have done exceptionally well.
